研究紹介

Most of the Chemical processes deal with the creation, elimination, or separation of one or more phases. Here, the Multiphase Processes Engineering laboratory deals with processes containing two or more phases from large scale to nano scale processes.

Synthesis of Optimal distillation process structures

Distillation is widely used in the Chemical and Petrochemical Industry. However, it inherently consumes a large amount of energy. Therefore, our laboratory aims to find a new generation of distillation process structures that can attain significant energy savings compared to typical distillation processes.

By using a superstructure representation and then reformulating it as a linear programming (LP) or mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) problem, the optimal process structure can be interpreted and simulated at a post-optimization step. This novel approach does not need any a priori information about distillation columns. However, it generates the optimal liquid and vapor paths, which can be interpreted into one or several distillation columns. This approach sometimes gives counterintuitive solutions that can help understanding distillation in a different way.
